We often talk about “the Bible” as one book, but the word actually comes from the Greek ta biblia — “the books.” Just as God is three in one, the Bible is many books compiled into one book. Across these books, the Bible uses many words to describe itself: the Word of God, Scripture, the Law, the Prophets, the commandments, prophecy, and the good news proclaimed through Christ.

From the opening pages of Genesis to the final vision of Revelation, the Bible presents God as one who speaks. God creates by his word, calls his people through his word, teaches them through his law, warns and comforts them through the prophets, and reveals the fullness of his saving work in Jesus Christ. Scripture is not treated as ordinary religious literature, but as God’s own truth given for instruction, correction, hope, wisdom, worship, and life.

The verses below gather passages where the Bible speaks about God’s Word, Scripture, the Law, prophecy, and the writings that point us to Christ. They are presented in a variety of different Bible translations. You can click each verse reference to read it in your own favorite version.

Reading the Bible as God’s Word

The Bible’s own testimony about Scripture is rich and layered. It calls God’s Word true, enduring, living, active, wise, and life-giving. It describes the Law and the Prophets as fulfilled in Christ, the Scriptures as written for our instruction, and the Word of God as something to hear, study, teach, obey, and treasure.

For Christians, reading the Bible is not merely about gaining information. It is about listening for the voice of God, learning the story of salvation, and being shaped by the truth that leads us to Christ. Scripture gives wisdom for ordinary life, hope in difficult seasons, and guidance for faithful discipleship.
